Debra and Peggy, Debates? Turnout and voters.

The Gossips know of two important events on Feb. 28th. The first is the joint appearance between Debra Danburg and Peggy Hamric for the League of Women Voters annual discussion. It takes place at the Westin Galleria at 11AM. The Texas Legislature lost two of its best women legislators when Debra and Peggy retired. Debra by the voters and Peggy leaving to run (and lose) a higher office. Their remembrances should be interesting. Tickets can be purchased by calling 713-784-2923.

And that same date there may be a debate between Hillary and Barack in Houston. The Greater Houston Partnership has it planned for the evening of the 28th, but so far only Senator Clinton has accepted. Obama says he will debate Hillary sometime and somewhere in Texas but the Gossips hear that he is getting some advice to debate in Dallas. It would be a nationwide TV debate so what difference does the location make? Maybe there are more Hispanic voters in Houston and that makes Senator Obama nervous or perhaps he just wants to make sure he appears in Dallas and this is the only time he can do it. Anyway it will be great to have the two of them debate somewhere in Texas.

And the Gossips are wondering if Hillary will have any momentum left by the time the Texas primaries happen on March 4th. Obama has won the last 5 caucuses and he looks like he could win again on Tuesday in the Chesapeake three elections. He should come to Texas with lots of support and will be riding a wave of publicity. Not the way the Clinton’s imagined when they started this contest. Judging from the turn out in the other states the Gossips hope the party chairs have ordered sufficient ballots or voting machines. We could have a record turnout in the primary.

And if you are a down ballot candidate in a contested Democratic March 4th primaries you might be just a little worried about voters going in to vote for either Hillary or Barack and not knowing who is who on the rest of the ballot. Sometimes these primary voters just vote for a name that sounds familiar. Sometimes for or against a name that sounds Hispanic. Sam Houston and Gene Kelley might have something going for them. Houston is well respected and Kelley is not. But Kelley has won or been in a runoff many times due to his name. Rick Noriega might have an advantage with his name and his many deserved endorsements, but watch out for some upsets cause by voters not knowing who they are voting for.
